UAE Personal Banking Option: National Bank of Fujairah (NBF)

Background

For clients considering opening a personal bank account in the UAE, managing personal funds, or allocating part of their assets in the UAE over the longer term, there are also other local banking options worth exploring beyond the larger and more widely known banks.

Among them, National Bank of Fujairah (NBF) is one of the UAE personal banking options that may be worth understanding further.

National Bank of Fujairah PJSC (NBF) was established in 1982 and is a UAE-based bank listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX).

NBF provides services across:

  • Corporate & Commercial Banking
  • Treasury
  • Trade Finance
  • Personal Banking

Its personal banking offering includes personal accounts, savings products and deposit products.

For clients looking to establish a personal banking relationship in the UAE while also considering cash placement, deposit arrangements and medium- to long-term financial planning, NBF may be one option worth exploring.

Personal Accounts and Fixed Deposits

NBF currently offers personal banking products including:

  • Current Accounts
  • Savings Accounts
  • Fixed Deposits

According to NBF’s currently published Fixed Deposit information, customers may select different deposit tenors and may place deposits in AED or other major currencies.

The actual applicable interest rate will depend on factors including:

  • Deposit tenor
  • Currency
  • Funding amount
  • The bank’s applicable terms at the time of placement

Customers should also note that Fixed Deposits are subject to applicable tenor and early termination conditions.

If a deposit is terminated before its agreed maturity date, the originally agreed interest rate may no longer apply and the interest may be recalculated in accordance with the bank’s applicable terms.

Can Clients Without a UAE Residence Visa Explore Deposit Arrangements?

This is one of the questions we have recently received from clients.

According to NBF’s currently published standard Fixed Deposit information, UAE Residency remains part of the general eligibility requirements for individual customers.

However, based on our current discussions with NBF, for certain clients who do not yet hold a UAE Residence Visa but already have a clear intention to place funds in the UAE, the bank may assess on a case-by-case basis whether an appropriate account or deposit arrangement may be available.

Accordingly, such arrangements should be understood as a case-by-case possibility subject to the client’s profile and the bank’s assessment, rather than as a standard account-opening policy generally available to all non-resident clients.

For non-resident clients, actual availability, the applicable account or deposit product, minimum funding requirement and KYC documentation may vary depending on factors including:

  • Nationality and residency status
  • Source of funds
  • Income and professional background
  • Intended funding level
  • Overall client profile and risk assessment

In certain cases, the client may also be required to attend in person to complete KYC, identity verification or other procedures required by the bank.

Accordingly, not holding a UAE Residence Visa does not mean automatic eligibility for account opening, nor does it guarantee approval of any account or deposit arrangement.

All arrangements remain subject to NBF’s:

  • KYC review
  • Compliance review
  • Eligibility assessment
  • Final approval

Documents That May Be Required

Based on our current discussions with the bank, the documents required for a personal banking application may vary depending on whether the client holds a UAE Residence Visa and on the client’s overall profile.

Non-Resident Clients

Documents that may generally be requested include:

  • Passport
  • Home-country address proof
  • Recent personal bank statements
  • Updated CV
  • Proof of income and source of funds

For employed clients, a Salary Certificate may be requested.

For business owners or self-employed clients, the bank may request:

  • Business licence
  • Relevant corporate documents
  • Supporting information relating to business activities and source of funds

UAE Resident Clients

Documents may generally include:

  • Passport
  • Emirates ID
  • UAE Residence Visa
  • Recent personal bank statements

For business owners or self-employed clients:

  • Relevant corporate bank statements
  • Trade Licence
  • Supporting corporate documents

For employed clients:

  • Salary Certificate

The above is provided as a general reference for document preparation and should not be regarded as a fixed or exhaustive NBF account-opening checklist.

The bank may request additional documents or clarification depending on the client’s:

  • Nationality
  • Residency status
  • Occupation
  • Source of funds
  • Intended account usage
  • Transaction background
  • Overall KYC profile

AED 2 Million Bank Deposit and Golden Residency Considerations

For clients who are also considering longer-term UAE residency planning, AED 2 million is also an important threshold referenced under certain current Golden Residency eligibility routes.

Under the current Golden Residency requirements published by the UAE Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), one of the qualifying routes under the Public Investments category is to maintain a financial deposit of at least AED 2 million with an investment fund or one of the national banks operating in the UAE.

ICP also states that the invested capital must:

  • Be fully owned by the investor
  • Not be derived from a loan
  • Be supported by documents evidencing the source and ownership of the funds

For example, under Dubai’s Bank Deposit Golden Residency route, GDRFA currently requires a local bank deposit of at least AED 2 million together with an appropriate official bank certificate.

The currently published requirements also include conditions relating to the freezing and continued holding of the deposit during the Golden Residency period.

Accordingly, deposit tenor, freezing conditions, ongoing holding requirements and withdrawal restrictions should not be understood solely by reference to any single period and should always be confirmed against the latest requirements of the relevant authority and bank at the time of application.

Important Note

An AED 2 million bank deposit does not automatically result in UAE Golden Residency approval.

A qualifying bank deposit is only one possible basis under the relevant investor category.

The applicant must still satisfy the prevailing requirements relating to:

  • Eligibility
  • Source of funds
  • Supporting documentation
  • Bank requirements
  • Government authority review
  • Final approval

Therefore, clients who already have relevant UAE funding requirements may consider personal banking, Fixed Deposit arrangements and long-term residency planning together as part of their overall planning.

However, each element should be assessed separately in accordance with the applicable bank and government requirements.

CA Perspective

For clients considering UAE personal banking, the key question is not simply which bank offers an account or deposit product.

The more important considerations usually include:

  • Whether the client’s residency status is acceptable
  • Whether the source of funds can be clearly demonstrated
  • Whether the intended deposit amount meets the bank’s requirements
  • Whether the client can satisfy KYC and compliance requirements
  • Whether the banking arrangement fits broader UAE residency or asset-planning objectives

Corridors Advisory (CA) can assist clients in:

  • Preliminary personal banking assessment
  • Reviewing expected KYC requirements
  • Coordinating with banking contacts
  • Preparing supporting information
  • Reviewing deposit-related arrangements
  • Coordinating UAE residency planning where relevant

All account-opening and deposit arrangements remain subject to the bank’s internal KYC, compliance, eligibility and final approval procedures.
